At Botha was born in Kroonstad (Free State, South Africa) on 23 December 1949 as the middle son of three brothers. Ever since childhood, he liked to draw and started painting and experimenting with pastels and watercolours at a very young age.
After graduating from school At spent two years in the South African Defence Force. After this he completed a Drama course at the University of Potchefstroom. Throughout his studies he never stopped painting.
During his lucrative career as an actor in various stage productions, TV series, TV dramas, feature films and cabarets, he stayed true to his vocation as a painter. To their great joy family members and friends were often gifted with his paintings.
In the early 80s, At decided to pursue painting as a second career alongside his acting career. With the assistance of several art dealers who believed in his work he soon became a household name: as an artist as much as an actor.
At is a self-taught artist who works mostly in oils. He prefers teaching in acrylics as it dries quickly and his art students can take their paintings home with them. People who are interested in At’s painting holidays on Paternoster are welcome to contact him on firstname.lastname@example.org. He focuses on people who have never painted and want to learn but everyone is welcome.
At is most known for his landscapes but since he opened the At Botha Art Gallery in Paternoster, on the West Coast of South Africa, he started painting sea scapes and other topics.
Johan Botha, son of At Botha, is a Johannesburg-based artist, specialising in both oil and acrylics on canvas.
Johan graduated from school at Die Kruin Art School in 1992 but he is mostly a self-taught painter. His subject matter is wide and varied, ranging from portrait commissions to forest landscapes. He has participated in numerous Johannesburg group exhibitions at prestigious galleries such as the David Krut Gallery and the Theresa Lizemore Gallery. In 2019, Johan presented a solo exhibition at the At Botha Art Gallery in Paternoster.
“Despite years of practice and experience every painting presents its own unique set of
challenges, always pushing me to unlock the full potential of the subject matter” – Johan Botha.
